West Gate Speed and School Zone

On Thursday April 26th Austin City Council Approved on Consent two items greatly affecting our neighborhood (via their website):

Approve an ordinance amending Section 12-4-64(D) of the City Code to add a portion of West Gate Boulevard to the table of streets having a maximum speed limit of 35 mph; and adding a portion of West Gate Boulevard and Kentish Drive to the table of streets as having a maximum speed limit of 20 mph at certain times for students attending Cowan Elementary School; and to provide emergency passage.

This means that the speed limit will remain under 35 mph, and we will be receiving signage in our area to improve the current speeding happening. As well, there will be a designated 20 mph zone with flashers during certain times of the day, a school zone. Also emergency passage across West Gate for those students in peak hours.

Please remember that this is the first stage, and that while the city council has passed this improvement to our area it may take a bit of time to get everything installed and see things in working order. We will do our best to keep apprised of current happenings and inform you as we find them out.

Thank you,

Your Board

Tanglewood Oaks Homeowners Association thanks Diana Amaro of Austin’s Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction Project for her very informative presentation on auto theft and burglary of vehicles and how to prevent it happening.  For additional information go to their website at http://afdrecruiting.org/page/auto-theft-interdiction-programs .
Diana gave us some of the following interesting information:

  • Nine out of the top 10 stolen vehicles are trucks.  Chevy Silverado is #1 in the Nation.
  • Many of the trucks are used for transporting people illegally.
  • The cars on the list are also stripped and used for sold parts.
  • Call 974-5906 to support any suspicious activity.
  • Top deterrents are the Club or Kill Switches.  Alarm systems are not effective alone.
  • There really are bait cars in Austin.  Not just a TV show – Who knew?!
  • Another deterrent is having all windows etched with the VIN number.  The APD holds free events in different locations all the time. The dates and locations are on their website and upcoming events are noted below.
  • Another deterrent is to engrave your driver’s license number on your TV, computer, DVD player, etc. using an etching tool.  These are inexpensive or the APD has several available to borrow.
